Laser hair removal and other hair removal techniques compared

If you have unwanted hair, there are lots of tried & tested techniques for removing it. Some methods are easier than others, some can be painful and others can be time consuming and messy. It’s all about the results though. Removing unwanted hair is a ritual for most of us, albeit one we would probably prefer not to have to go through, and we do it for many different reasons.

Here’s a brief description of some of the most common hair removal techniques:

Laser hair removal – Lasers use a single light wavelength, which destroys the hair follicles and prevents regrowth. It can be used on sensitive skin and most areas of the body & face. It is completely pain free and relieves in growing hairs with no traces of stubble or visible roots. Laser hair removal is the most permanent method of reducing hair growth available.

IPL – Hair follicles are targeted, using different light wavelengths which destroy the follicles and can  prevent regrowth. It can be used on sensitive areas such as bikini line and underarms. IPL leaves no visible stubble or hair roots. Growth is reduced but it is not permanent, so additional treatments may be required. Because it uses different light wavelengths, it takes longer than laser hair removal to target every hair follicle. The laser head is small and it can be time consuming, making it more suitable for smaller areas. It is not a pain free experience (elastic band snapping feeling). The results are long lasting, but not permanent.

Shaving – This is by far the most common method of removing unwanted hair. It is relatively cheap and pain-free, though can result in irritation. The results only last for a few days, and stubble re-growth can begin to show not long after shaving.

Waxing – A lifetime of waxing is expensive. It is messy and can be pretty painful. It can’t be used on sensitive skin and stubble re-growth can cause problems. Results can last up to 4 weeks though.

Tweezing – The results can be reasonably long-lasting and it is inexpensive. It can be very time consuming though, as each hair has to be removed individually. Tweezing can be painful in sensitive areas and it can cause inflammation. It can only usually be used on small areas and results can last up to 6 weeks.

Depilatories – These are easy to use but they can cause irritation or chemical burns if left on the skin too long. Results can last up to a week.

Epilators – These are also easy to use and often the hair will grow back less coarse. It is painful though and can cause troublesome in growing hairs. The results can last up to 4 weeks.

Electrolysis – This is very time consuming as each hair is removed individually. It is only really suitable for small areas. The results can be long lasting but it can cause inflammation and hairs can grow back.
